Development Process
Frontier is a professional company with strong skills in hardware design and development in addition to software development. The development process adopted aids this system engineering capabilities by suitably integrating hardware development processes into the whole cycle. Another unique feature of the flow is the independent Release Validation function including independent validation planning. This planning could start well before the product is offered for Release Validation - taking the Requirements and other upstream project / product documents as inputs. This function reinforces the inspections / reviews / tests that were done earlier in the lifecycle.
Though it is the classical 'Waterfall' model that is followed at Frontier, iterations between stages are built into the model. The technical inspections done at each stage and the tests that are done towards the end of the development lifecycle trigger these iterations so the end product meets the agreed Requirements. The Flow Graph shows the development cycle.

All the Processes have their measures defined, as well as the criteria to determine Process performance. This enables data analysis and also informed decisions to be taken on process changes aimed at continuous improvement. This is not only in the long term but also with respect to project / product specific process needs.
As is evident from the Project Management Model, project management at Frontier begins right from Proposal preparation when the ballpark estimate and the first round of planning is done, and continues till the project is closed after acceptance / product release. The highlights of this model are the use of data from past projects and the integration of Quality Management and Risk Management with the mainstream activities.

All the Project Managers who already have adequate experience and domain knowledge are further trained on Frontier Processes before they handle projects, thus ensuring the use of similar (if not uniform) Engineering and Management Processes in projects.
